Description
Water hardness ranks alongside pH, alkalinity and sanitiser level among the key pillars of correct pool and spa water balance. Too low and the water becomes aggressive towards liners, grout and equipment; too high and scale builds up on heaters, tiles and pipework. These Deep Blue hardness test strips provide a quick, four-pad reading of total hardness so calcium levels can be kept within the ideal band.
Hardness mainly reflects dissolved calcium and magnesium, which is why these strips are also useful for aquarium keepers, where mineral balance supports fish health, mucus production and osmotic regulation.

How to Use
- Dip the test strip into the water sample for 2 seconds.
- Hold the strip horizontally for 30 seconds to get an accurate reading.
- Compare with the colour chart, reading the result within the next 30 seconds for best accuracy.

Found these fast and so simple to use. Take out a strip, hold it in the water by the marked grip at the top, keep it in place for 60 seconds, then remove it without shaking. Lay it flat next to the chart on the pack to line up the answers and you are done.

I knew the water was hard around the London area but wanted to check how much so got this kit as Mrs was saying she was reacting to the water
Put some water into a small glass/container don’t put the stick under the running tap as it rubs the minerals off the stick too quickly!
Dip the stick into the water for 3 seconds and hey presto it’ll change colour which you can match up using the key
I’ll looking to take it elsewhere where someone has a softener or the water is softer generally to see if it does read correctly!

However, I’m pleasantly surprised. The strips work very well, and I can be 100% sure about this because I have my water softener connected to the hot water only. This is how I wanted it to be setup. I do not want my drinking water softened any more than it is, I actually have a separate filter for that anyway
So, I did two tests, and as you can see from the photo. Green is the hot water tap result, and light brown is the cold water tap result. In a nutshell my hot water is soft, and my drinking water is mildly soft. Perfect!

I turned off my water to my water softener and took a sample after running the water for a couple of minutes and tested the water and it showed it was very hard, I repeated the test with the softener on and after running the tap to clear the hard water – see the results on the photo, so in my opinion thru are very good value for money!

I know these kits are losing favour, but for me the tests are not too time consuming or difficult. The low end phosphate levels are hard to make out unless you use natural light with few shadows. I would go with an electronic checker for sps, but for a mixed reef like mine this is perfectly acceptable. As a side note, if you keep sps I would still have this kit handy as a non electronic backup and for checking how well your gfo is working. Run two tests at the same time and compare the colour of the vials from the tank water and from the reactor water, and change the media if the reactor is showing the same phosphate level as the tank. It saves wear on your pricey electronic checker.

This gives the most accurate test results. These are widely considered the best testing supplies for checking reef tank parameters. There is a lot of competition and plenty of products out there, but if the results are not accurate then who cares what the price is. The kits are not cheap, yet they give the best results according to the other local reefers I have asked. The real negative is that they are not that easy to use, but once you get the hang of it they all follow basically the same instructions, so it gets easier. To sum up, if a test kit is not accurate then it will not help the reef, so for me these win hands down.

My only complaint is that the 15 ml syringe cracked the first time I tried to draw water in, as the plunger seems bigger than the tube. My only criticism, and this is on me rather than on the strips or the seller, is that I find them harder to read now than I did ten years ago. With my eyesight, the subtle differences on the colour chart sometimes give me trouble, usually when trying to tell a straight zero from something around the halfway mark. I am confident that if there was a serious ammonia problem, and anything above zero needs attention, the colour would tell me, as the green gets more intense. Plenty of light and a white backdrop help with reading the results as well.

When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a good idea to check for lead before you go any further. Elegant colour rendering and a scale in steps of 0.2, and I really like being able to check the phosphate level two or three times a week so I can top it back up and keep the nitrates where I want them. The colours are far better than the other phosphate test I own. I tested both at the same time and the other one was less accurate, with a scale spread too widely in steps of 0.5 ppm. The set includes a little spoon for the powder, but remember to use the smaller end for scooping. The glass containers are the same quality as the other kit, but the caps are far better because there is no aluminium backed paper that peels apart, just a fairly firm foam insert that does not come apart in the stopper. I am not sure it shows in the photos, but with the naked eye the difference is obvious.
