For anyone keeping fish, water quality counts for far more than clear water, and testing is the only dependable way to check it. What you should watch for depends on the age of the setup: nitrite issues tend to show up in new tanks and struggling filters, whereas rising nitrate is typical of an established system. Free chlorine is worth watching too, since it flags tap water top-ups that have not been dechlorinated.

How to Use
- Immerse the test strip in the water sample for 2 seconds.
- Do not shake off the excess water. Keep the strip flat and hold it for 30 seconds to obtain an accurate reading.
- Compare the strip against the colour chart, checking the result within the following 30 seconds for the best accuracy.

The real negative is that they are not that very easy to use, but once you get the hang of it they all follow basically the same instructions, so it gets easier. Good to have for testing water from a RODI unit. I picked this up at my local shop as I needed something fast to test the fresh water coming out of my unit. For a shade chart test it works pretty well and was near enough spot on with my digital tester, which read 0.101 while this kit read between 0.07 and 0.1. My only complaint is that the 15 ml syringe cracked the first time I tried to draw water in, as the plunger seems bigger than the tube. Thankfully I had others on hand so it was not a big deal, but it is something they could look into.

A quick and easy way to gauge a critical water quality condition. I love these test strips because they measure perhaps the most deadly element in the hobby in a simple way. My only criticism, and this is on me rather than on the strips or the shop, is that I find them harder to read now than I did ten years ago. With my eyesight, the subtle differences on the colour chart sometimes give me trouble, usually when trying to tell a straight zero from something around the halfway mark. I am confident that if there was a serious ammonia problem, and anything above zero needs attention, the colour would tell me, as the green gets more intense. Plenty of light and a white backdrop help with reading the readings as well.

Elegant colour rendering and a scale in steps of 0.2, and I really like being able to check the phosphate level two or three times a week so I can top it back up and keep the nitrates where I want them. The colours are far better than the other phosphate test I own. I tested both at the same time and the other one was less consistent, with a scale spread too widely in steps of 0.5 ppm. The set includes a little spoon for the powder, but remember to use the smaller end for scooping. The glass containers are the same quality as the other kit, but the caps are far better because there is no aluminium backed paper that peels apart, just a fairly firm foam insert that does not come apart in the stopper. I am not sure it shows in the photos, but with the naked eye the difference is obvious.

When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a good idea to check for lead before you go any further. I am very glad I did, and also very glad I checked the mid century bench seat I was planning to sand down and repaint. Testing 24 hours apart I can witness the nitrogen cycle absorbing and converting liquid fertilizer. The pH spectrum is limited and I’m higher than ideal but just outside the range of this test. It’s not as specific as a full liquid test kit but perfect for weekly monitoring and instantaneous.
Good value for test strips. Price point was the best option both locally and on-line so I highly recommend. Definitely keep the bottle stored away from lights as the comparison chart is on the bottle label and not protected from UV deterioration of the colour comparison chart. A secondary chart STORED INSIDE THE BOTTLE would be an improvement on this product. 125 test strips will last a si glue tank 2.4 years when testing once weekly. That’s ample time for a colour chart on the label to deteriorate if left in a brightly lit place,such as beside tank with full spectrum grow lights.😉

I know these kits are losing favour, but for me the tests are not too time consuming or difficult. The low end phosphate levels are hard to make out unless you use natural light with few shadows. I would go with an electronic checker for sps, but for a mixed reef like mine this is perfectly acceptable. As a side note, if you keep sps I would still have this kit useful as a non electronic backup and for checking how well your gfo is working. Run two tests at the same time and compare the colour of the vials from the tank water and from the reactor water, and change the media if the reactor is showing the same phosphate level as the tank. It saves wear on your pricey electronic checker.

The best I have used. I have tried quite a few traditional phosphate kits and this is by far the easiest to carry out and to read. The larger water sample and the quantity of reagents both help.
