Description
Each fry cycle pushes up the Free Fatty Acid content of cooking oil, and with it the Acid Value, the milligrams of potassium hydroxide required to neutralise the fatty acids in one gram of oil. These Deep Blue cooking oil test strips measure that degradation directly, swapping guesswork and fixed schedules for an objective reading.
The economics are straightforward for any commercial kitchen: change the oil too soon and money is wasted, leave it too long and food quality, taste and customer satisfaction all suffer. A two-second dip in cooled oil settles the matter either way.

How to Use
- Dip the reagent end of the strip into cool oil (10 to 30°C / 50 to 86°F) for 2 seconds, then take it out.
- Hold the strip flat for 60 seconds.
- Check against the colour chart straight away for an accurate result.

As I didn’t have any used oils to hand, I tested on of the strips on some vegetable oil from a previously opened, partly used, bottle. Using the strip as instructed, the tip of the strip changed colour slightly, giving me a reading of 0.3, which is probably about right.
As I don’t often use oil for deep frying, I’ve usually disposed of it afterwards because I wasn’t sure when I would use it again and if it would still be OK. Instead of throwing the next batch of oil away, I will store it for future use and then see how it tests. I don’t know how if the oil will be ‘off’ by then or even if being ‘off’ is part of what the strip tests. It will be interesting to find out the result. If the strip works in the way I would like it to, then it could mean that I am throwing away freshly used oil unnecessarily and could save myself some money.

These test strips have made testing fryer oil much easier. They’re incredibly simple to use. Just dip one into the hot oil, wait around a minute, and compare the colour with the chart. The results are easy to understand, and the clear Ideal, Monitor and Replace zones take the guesswork out of deciding when it’s time to change the oil.
One feature I didn’t expect to use as much as I have is the free app. Being able to log each oil check with a timestamp is really useful for keeping organised records, especially if you need to demonstrate HACCP procedures. It was quick to set up, and I like that you don’t have to create an account before using it.
The container seals well, so the strips stay protected from moisture and kitchen steam, and having 150 tests in one pack means it should last a long time.
It’s an affordable and practical way to improve food quality while avoiding unnecessary oil changes. I’d definitely buy these again.

These oil test strips are a really good quality product, although I have to admit they are really intended for professional kitchens rather than home use. I don’t use my deep fat fryer every day, so having 150 test strips and an app for monitoring oil quality is a bit more advanced than I actually need. I picked these up as a bit of a curiosity item to get an actual reading of oil health in my deep fat fryer against my whims for when I usually change it for home use, and found the results quite surprising, along with further uses I had not considered at the time as well.
When it comes to testing fryer oil, this was straight forward, and consisted of placing one drip of cold oil on the strip and letting it develop for 60 seconds. I also did the same with a control of fresh, unused oil (as can be seen in the attached photo). Although frying onion rings in the oil tested (which I mostly use for chips) had shifted the colour distinctly golden, it turns out that significant breakdown of the oil had not occurred, and that plenty of life was left in it – with the presented shade landing roughly in the middle of the ideal range for free fatty acids.
Interestingly I also tested some new and unused generic supermarket brand extra virgin olive oil, and discovered something I was not quite expecting – in its natural state it has significantly more free fatty acids, coming in close to the acceptable pass grade of around 0.8 as specified for supplying this oil for food usage. So yes, if you have preference for your olive oils in that regard, these test strips can be used for this as well – along with grading rancidity of unused oil that’s been stored for some time.
All in, a fun science experiment, with some practical and useful culinary outcomes.

It’s surprisingly difficult to judge cooking oil just by looking at it. Sometimes it still looks perfectly fine, even though it’s probably seen one batch of chips too many. These strips take the guessing out of it.
Using them couldn’t really be much simpler. Dip a strip into the oil, wait about a minute, then compare the colour against the chart. The result is easy enough to read, with clear zones showing whether the oil is still good, needs monitoring or is ready to be replaced.
I also had a look at the companion app, which is a useful addition if you’re keeping records for a professional kitchen or just like having everything logged in one place. It’s nice that you don’t have to create an account before using it.
With 150 strips in the pack, there’s enough to last quite a while, and the container keeps them protected from moisture between uses.

I have been deep-frying various foods at home and during family gatherings, such as chicken tenders, French fries, donuts, and even fish, for more than fifteen years. And, judging by the off taste, smoking, and discoloration, I can tell whether the frying oil is still okay or already degraded. Thanks to these Bartovation Oil Test Strips, my frying experience improved drastically. In the last month, I used multiple test strips, testing different batches of oil I was using while deep frying, and they gave reliable and useful readings, enabling me to switch oil in time and not by guesswork anymore.
Their usage is extremely easy. Simply dip the blue area of the strip into the oil for a few seconds, remove it, wait for about fifteen seconds, and see whether there is any color change according to the scale on the strip. Strips measure levels of free fatty acid (FFA) from 0 to 8 percent, so it is quite easy to understand what is going on with your cooking oil. After every three or four large batches of deep-fried foods, the readings usually are pretty high – 4-5 percent is the level where oil gets slightly off-colored and affects the quality of food negatively. Strips remain dry in the moisture-wicking bottle, and give a noticeable color reaction in a matter of a few seconds.
