Description
A reliable pH reading underpins water treatment, brewing, soap making, aquarium keeping and countless other workshop and laboratory tasks. These Deep Blue universal strips span the full 0 to 14 scale, and four reaction pads per strip give a surer match than basic single-pad litmus papers.
Dip for two seconds, hold the strip level for 30 seconds, then match the pad panel to the chart. The broad scale copes with everything from acidic descalers through neutral drinking water to strongly alkaline cleaning solutions.

How to Use
- Dip the strip into the liquid for 2 seconds, then remove it.
- Hold the strip flat for 30 seconds.
- Check against the colour chart to read off the pH value.

With my eyesight, the subtle differences on the colour chart sometimes give me trouble, usually when trying to tell a straight zero from something around the halfway mark. I am confident that if there was a serious ammonia problem, and anything above zero needs attention, the colour would tell me, as the green gets more intense. Plenty of light and a white backdrop help with reading the results as well.

I know these kits are losing favour, but for me the tests are not too time consuming or difficult. The low end phosphate levels are hard to make out unless you use natural light with few shadows. I would go with an electronic checker for sps, but for a mixed reef like mine this is perfectly acceptable. As a side note, if you keep sps I would still have this kit very handy as a non electronic backup and for checking how well your gfo is working. Run two tests at the same time and compare the colour of the vials from the tank water and from the reactor water, and change the media if the reactor is showing the same phosphate level as the tank. It saves wear on your pricey electronic checker.

When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a decent idea to check for lead before you go any further. I am very glad I did, and also very glad I checked the mid century bench seat I was planning to sand down and repaint. This little kit was straightforward to use on both horizontal and vertical surfaces and gave a clear reading. I was not surprised that the wall paint contained lead given the age of the building, but I am very glad I checked the bench as well. High levels can affect the fish’s respiratory system and stop them taking oxygen from the water, and ultimately that will kill them. Elegant colour rendering and a scale in steps of 0.2, and I really like being able to check the phosphate level two or three times a week so I can top it back up and keep the nitrates where I want them. The colours are far better than the other phosphate test I own. I tested both at the same time and the other one was less accurate, with a scale spread too widely in steps of 0.5 ppm. The set includes a little spoon for the powder, but remember to use the smaller end for scooping. The glass containers are the same build quality as the other kit, but the caps are far better because there is no aluminium backed paper that peels apart, just a fairly firm foam insert that does not come apart in the stopper. I am not sure it shows in the photos, but with the naked eye the difference is obvious.

Good to have for testing water from a RODI unit. I picked this up at my local shop as I needed something without any delay to test the fresh water coming out of my unit. For a colour chart test it works pretty well and was near enough spot on with my digital tester, which read 0.101 while it read between 0.07 and 0.1. My only complaint is that the 15 ml syringe cracked the first time I tried to draw water in, as the plunger seems bigger than the tube. Thankfully I had others on hand so it was not a big deal, but it is something they could look into.

I just tested vinegar which turned Red with 1pH. Saliva was green 7pH and urine was gold = 5pH. So I have no idea why people are complaining about the strips not changing color. They seem like a quality product, easy to use and easy to read. Just don’t ever expose the strips to any humidity or moisture. Do not store the strips in an area that will be exposed to steam or humidity which will ruin the strips. And use very dry hands and surface when handling these strips. Moisture will render them useless. If you’re a novice and using these strips to test kombucha, use a small container to collect and test the booch. Dipping the strip into the fermentation container will ruin your batch as there are chemicals that will kill your Scoby. Anyway buy these with confidence and keep them bone dry.
