Description
Coliform bacteria serve as the water industry’s standard early-warning indicator: coliforms themselves rarely make anyone ill, but their presence signals that disease-causing organisms could be present in the same supply. This Deep Blue kit uses a US EPA-compliant method able to detect more than 50 species of coliform bacteria, with contamination revealed by a simple colour change after 48 hours of incubation.
If coliforms are detected, first make sure the test was run properly and not accidentally contaminated, and retest if in doubt. A confirmed positive calls for laboratory testing for faecal coliform or E.coli, with boiling advised until disinfection and retesting confirm the supply is clear.

Store the kit cool and dry, ideally between 2 and 8°C, and test private supplies at least annually and after any flooding or works.
How to Use
- Pour 50ml of the sample water into the vial, up to the maximum water level, and tighten the cap.
- Shake the vial up and down to dissolve the powder inside.
- Leave for 48 hours.
- Check the colour of the water sample against the colour code on the bottle to obtain your result.

For a colour chart test it works pretty well and was near enough spot on with my digital tester, which read 0.101 while this kit read between 0.07 and 0.1. Elegant colour rendering and a scale in steps of 0.2, and I very like being able to check the phosphate level two or three times a week so I can top it back up and keep the nitrates where I want them. The colours are far better than the other phosphate test I own. I tested both at the same time and the other one was less reliable, with a scale spread too widely in steps of 0.5 ppm. The set includes a little spoon for the powder, but remember to use the smaller end for scooping. The glass containers are the same quality as the other kit, but the caps are far better because there is no aluminium backed paper that peels apart, just a fairly firm foam insert that does not come apart in the stopper. I am not sure it shows in the photos, but with the naked eye the difference is obvious.

This is the first time I’ve ever set up a pool that is intended to stay up for the whole season. These strips are invaluable in keeping the water quality up. You get a large number of strips, plus four separate tests for coliform bacteria if you should need to use them, for a very reasonable price. This many strips should last me the whole season. The strips are easy to use, and only take a few seconds. They allow you to keep up with all the important chemical levels, and though in my tiny pool (8′ x 5′) mostly all I check is the chlorine levels, if something were to get way out of whack, I would have the information needed to get the proper chemicals from the pool store to correct it. I would definitely get this kit again.

Better safe than sorry. When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a decent idea to check for lead before you go any further. The results are pretty easy to interpret using the color chart provided, though somewhat subjective. The directions do state that the results are an indication only, and need to be verified by a lab test for best accuracy. The Arsenic test has more steps, but similar to the coliform test. All in all these tests help you get an insight into possible bad water conditions. You know a lot more after the test than before, a good deal, recommended.

I know these kits are losing favour, but for me the tests are not too time consuming or difficult. The low end phosphate levels are hard to make out unless you use natural light with few shadows. I would go with an electronic checker for sps, but for a mixed reef like mine this is perfectly acceptable. As a side note, if you keep sps I would still have the kit useful as a non electronic backup and for checking how well your gfo is working. Run two tests at the same time and compare the colour of the vials from the tank water and from the reactor water, and change the media if the reactor is showing the same phosphate level as the tank. It saves wear on your pricey electronic checker.

High levels can affect the fish’s respiratory system and stop them taking oxygen from the water, and ultimately that will kill them. Not even counting the bacteria test, it’s nice to have everything all on one easy to use strip. It’s super fast to test and see everything at a glance, having all the scales on the side of the bottle in the order they appear on the strip, so you don’t have to run multiple tests, and there’s none of the second-guessing you get into with electronic tests. It takes seconds to do the test, and then scan your eyes down the scales and check for any extremes that stand out.
The bacteria tests are neat, and give some peace of mind, despite taking 48 hours to perform. Thankfully, no worrisome results yet, but it’s always good to know. I’ll probably be picking up more of those tests for next year, as the included tests will definitely last the rest of the season.

My only criticism, and this is on me rather than on these strips or the shop, is that I find them harder to read now than I did ten years ago. With my eyesight, the subtle differences on the colour chart sometimes give me trouble, usually when trying to tell a straight zero from something around the halfway mark. I am confident that if there was a serious ammonia problem, and anything above zero needs attention, the colour would tell me, as the green gets more intense. Plenty of light and a white backdrop help with reading the results as well.

Lots of tests. I felt like a scientist using this laboratory build quality kit. A typical home kit usually contains only one or two tests, whereas this bottle has no frills but loads of tests to share with all your neighbours. It looks like something straight out of a lab. They do expire, but there is loads of time to test through winter and spring. We tested our bottled water, our tap water and our reverse osmosis filter.

If you are new to fish keeping then test kits are essential, and this is the best I have used. Get yourself a master kit for freshwater or marine, then buy the single bottles to top up as you start to run out. The instructions are easy to follow, and it is handy to have a small medicine syringe on hand to transfer tank water. If you use one, leave room for air above the test tubes and go slowly, or the pressure will smash them.
