Description
In the average home, lead exposure is more likely to come from old paintwork, glazed ceramics, toys and salvaged fittings than from water alone, and the health stakes are real: lead disrupts haemoglobin synthesis and is associated with nervous system and digestive effects, with young children most at risk. These Deep Blue lead test swabs give you an instant screening tool to hand.
They prove useful wherever older materials appear: sanding pre-1970s paint during a renovation, checking reclaimed doors and radiators, screening vintage toys, or testing glazed dishes before they reach the table.
Deep Blue water testing products are built to a high standard and colour matched for accurate, repeatable results, and the test strip range is trusted by pool professionals, holiday let operators and dedicated home users across the UK.
Treat any positive result seriously: stop disturbing the surface, keep children away, and arrange professional testing or removal.
How to Use
- Wet the tip of the swab with water and shake off any excess liquid.
- Once the tip turns a mustard yellow colour, rub it against the surface promptly for 30 seconds.
- Match the swab against the colour reference on the label (top or bottom) to obtain your result.

I read about this before buying and it is a new, reliable and easy testing method. I tried it on some pretty vintage plates I picked up second hand and two out of three tested positive for lead, so we will not be using them for food any more. The test is very nice and easy indeed, you put one drop of the liquid on the surface you want to test and then shine the included UV light on it, and if it goes green there is lead.

Miss V. V. Armstrong-Ryan (verified owner) –
Well packaged, prompt delivery and the item was just exactly as described. I would highly recommend this seller.
Dr Y. U. Chowdhury –
This test is so simple and the results come through immediately. The problem I have is that my phosphates are honestly low, possibly zero, and when you are in the low range it is very difficult to read. I am debating whether to buy another, as I am almost out, and whether to send a sample away for professional testing so I can tell if I have any phosphates at all and then judge the readings on this test better. I am also wondering about a more expensive electronic checker, but I know I would not like the fiddly powder reagents. I only have about two tests left, so time matters and I need to know whether to keep dosing. I should have sent one off sooner, because I do like this test a lot.

Worked perfectly when testing for lead content in a cheap pair of glass salt and pepper shakers. The swab on the left was tested on the shakers, and the swab on the right was used on an antique fishing lure I knew to be made of lead.

This is a handy kit for doing quick checks on painted or glazed surfaces where you’re concerned about possible lead. The swabs are straightforward to use and the results come through quickly, which makes it useful for an initial check.
Having 30 tests in the pack is also useful and good value if you want to test several areas around the home. I used it on some ceramics i bought back from holiday – and its a good job I did…. as you can see pictured the swabs detected lead.
Overall, it’s a simple and convenient screening kit. Just remember that home test kits are best treated as an initial indication rather than a definitive laboratory test.

Really decent value for money. I thought 50 did not sound a lot but they last a good while, and they are easy to make out and use. Recommend.
Ms Angus Ross (verified owner) –
Very solid. I have used a few different types and the strips seem to be far more accurate.
Mrs Nigel Roberts (verified owner) –
These tests appear to be accurate (I tested both some paint I was sure was lead, and some stainless steel cookware that I am sure has no lead), and they’re certainly easy to use and understand. As someone who buys vintage glass, plates, and furniture from op shops and tips, I really like having testing swabs on hand; these are my favourite. Results are fast and clear, and all you need to activate the swab is a little water. I’d recommend keeping tissues or baby wipes on hand, as the swabs leave a tea-coloured residue on the test piece (which wipes away fine from sealed/glossy surfaces, but might stain unsealed surfaces- consider testing an inconspicuous patch).
The bottle is sturdy, a convenient size for carrying in a bag, and the cap screws down tight. The label has all necessary instructions on it, and a comparison gradient, and there’s a desiccant sachet inside the container.
If you have any sort of colour blindness that means you cannot perceive a visual difference between dark orange and dark pink-y red, these swabs probably won’t be readable to you; my colourblind girlfriend can’t read them, even when they’re very well “developed”. The colour range in the pictures on the amazon listing is pretty accurate; if the scale from “no lead — lead” doesn’t look like a pretty clear colour gradient to you (not just a light-dark gradient), you’ll need someone else to interpret the results of these swabs for you.

It all comes in a really nice plastic container that you can keep everything in, and it looks a lot better quality than the last one I bought, which only lasted a couple of years before the colour faded. This one cost more, so I hope it lasts a decent deal longer.

I. I. Turner (verified owner) –
I recently bought this kit and was very impressed with the service, the quick delivery and the quality of the products. I had been using another well known brand, but found this shop online and decided to give them a go. The products are better quality and cheaper, so I will not be switching back. Highly recommended.
Mr Priya P. Hamilton –

Alisha Haque-Spencer (verified owner) –
Better than the well known branded ones. I decided to try these test sticks as I found my usual ones were not giving the readings I expected, and to my delight they were better and more accurate, and much more competitively priced too. Would buy again.
Gary O’Brien –
This is my go to test kit now. It is accurate and genuinely easy to use, and honestly it is the only testing kit you need. Get some yourself.
Mr F. S. Mehta –
It works a treat for a speedy, rough check. It skews slightly, but it is fine. The app is a huge plus.
Evan Harrison –
Reliable and a really simple to use test kit. I have been using these for years and they have never let me down.
Ms Darren Mahmood (verified owner) –
Perfect for the job. I have tried cheaper ones but they were not as reliable as these. It is just costly when a tube only lasts a month. Fine for what I need.

I initially bought this because I wanted to check whether a cheap bottle off Temu had lead paint, it was negative.
Having spare swabs, I thought I’d test it on my kitchen taps, immediately turned bright red as if it was painted red.
I will have to contact my water supplier to check our pipes now…
Ms Evan Douglas –
A robust purchase with professional performance that works well even in tough conditions, and it is great value for money.
Miss Orla N. Parker (verified owner) –
I could not do without these now. They are quick to use and I trust the result every time. Just what I needed.

Easy and straightforward to use. It is a good product because you can do it privately at home, with no awkward moments taking samples to the doctors. Very pleased with the purchase.

Molly Douglas –
I will only use these test strips, I find they are the most reliable ones I have tried. No complaints at all.
Miss X. Q. McCarthy –
It is perfectly fine, but I’ve to ask my wife to judge the shades of colour as she is far more sensitive to them. The average bloke will struggle a bit with it.
Miss Mohammed Gill (verified owner) –
Overall, works well and it is much easier than trying to make out the colours on the strip yourself.
Miss Lily Richards (verified owner) –
At first I thought it was a scam because the prices were so low, but after reading the reviews and seeing how long the shop has been going I wanted to give it a try. I had an email order confirmation and a dispatch confirmation, and it was all here within three days. Just fantastic. Just what I needed.
Hafsa Richards (verified owner) –

Ms Sonia Sandhu-Byrne –
A solid item, and it is easy to work out the levels in the tub. Simple to use, and the reading is clear enough to act on right away.
Mr Rosie Ryan –
A decent kit, although I am still looking for one that is not too not easy to read. My last one was clear for zero phosphate and sort of clear for some phosphate. This one is yellow, or yellower, at the low end, and higher readings do turn green, which is better than the others that just go a darker shade of blue as the level increases.

Easy to use. This is the only test kit I have used, but it seems okay to me and the result is easy to make out enough. It does the job.
Hamza Harrison (verified owner) –

Bethany W. Robertson (verified owner) –

Mr Colin Anderson (verified owner) –
It does exactly what it says on the tin, or on the packet in this case. Simple to use and the result is clearly readable. No complaints at all.
Mr I. V. Russell (verified owner) –
Excellent! So easy to use, and can be re-dampened within a day or two and they still read. Obviously don’t put them back in the tub once wet.
The day they arrives, I excitedly went around the kitchen and yey, no lead, but also, boo, I want to see it work.
I let it dry hanging over the edge of my desk, and 2 days later remembered I had some stained glass. Out of anything, that was likely to actually be lead. Instantly turned hot magenta pink from rubbing it.
The swabs have tons of solution on them. Very impressed and excellent value, too!
Paul A. Murphy –
Excellent strips that work perfectly, nice and simple to use and the colour change is clear every time.
Kabir N. Anderson (verified owner) –
Good strips, simple to use and quick to give a clear reading, and they turned up promptly as well.
Miss Neha Kapoor (verified owner) –

Mrs Chantelle Bhat –
Highly recommended. The quality for the price is honestly high and they are simple to use, so I am very pleased with them.
Mr John Reddy –
Great purchase, excellent price and great delivery. You just dip the strip and compare the colours of each section with the matching section on the bottle.
Murdo Ward (verified owner) –
Better safe than sorry. When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a decent idea to check for lead before you go any further. I am really glad I did, and also very glad I checked the mid century bench seat I was planning to sand down and repaint. This little kit was simple to use on both horizontal and vertical surfaces and gave a clear reading. I was not surprised that the wall paint contained lead given the age of the building, but I am very glad I checked the bench as well. It has saved me from sanding lead paint and for that reason I am very thankful I bought it.
Freya Kennedy –
They work really good. I keep using them to determine the strength of my various solutions and they have taken all the guess work out of it.
R. Anderson –
As the purchase was out of stock, after a phone call and with my agreement the supplier sent me an alternative, which does not tell you whether the reading you have taken is correct or not, so you have to rely on your own experience. All the same, the test works fine for me.
Martin Q. Jackson (verified owner) –
I chose this one instead of the other brand I was looking at because it’s easier to work with and you get more for your money. I used a same day postage voucher, which meant it reached me on the same day I ordered. This shop has the best prices.
Miss Poppy Shaw (verified owner) –
Exactly as the product description says, straightforward to use and the result is easy to make out off.

Very satisfied, the quality is professional and the performance is first rate. Exceptional value for the money.
Ms Louie Graham (verified owner) –
Easy to use and easy to read the readings, the colour change is clear and comes through fast.
Rahul Byrne (verified owner) –
I have used the strips for years by using the dilution method, and they give a reasonable ballpark estimate of the concentration, though not quite to my satisfaction. It would be genuinely useful if there were strips that could read stronger concentrations directly without having to resort to diluting the sample first.
Jas Russell –
Great the quality. The tube that holds the strips is pretty airtight. I compared them against my digital meter and they were accurate. The colours are easy to read and I am glad I tried these after using some lesser quality strips from a different make. Will buy again.
Miss Simran U. Thompson –
I have not used them yet, but they arrived promptly and well packaged so I’m happy so far.
Alistair McLean (verified owner) –
I spoke to someone at the shop who was genuinely knowledgeable, I placed the order and paid online and the items turned up within the timescale advised. Simple and efficient.

I’m very happy with this lead test kit. It arrived well packaged and was very easy to use thanks to the clear instructions. I tested several surfaces around my home, and the results appeared within seconds as advertised. It’s a great way to quickly check for potential lead hazards, especially if you have young children. The value for the price is excellent since the kit includes multiple test swabs. I would definitely purchase it again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and easy-to-use lead test kit.

The item is very good quality and the packaging is really well made, and looks like it will stop the strips taking on moisture and affecting the results. I will be buying this all the time in future.

Dr Helena Haque –
Decent value. With the price of the reagents I was using going up, I tried this kit instead, and it is much easier to test with as there is no powder to deal with. I tested on three separate occasions and both kits came close to the same readings, though the older one gave a slightly more definite answer. It comes down to how hard you chase numbers, and in my opinion this one is better value.
Mrs Vikram A. Singh (verified owner) –

It cost a little more than the other big online seller, however I needed this quicker than they could manage. I need it for measuring the dilution of the bleach I keep using for cleaning. I have been using one solution for everyday food customer service level sanitation, and another stronger one for cleaning the bathroom and toilet at home.
Harriet Fisher –
Very straightforward to use test strips, and the colour change is clear and speedy.
Ms Rohan R. Reynolds –
A good product, although there could be more in the pack for the money. It does the job.
Mr Ismail Cole (verified owner) –
The lead test swabs are very easy to use. The implementation is uncomplicated and you get a result quickly without the need for any special previous knowledge or additional tools.
However, I find the evaluation a bit inaccurate. On the packaging, there is essentially just a color bar for comparison. As a result, a more precise assessment of the discoloration is difficult, especially if the result is ambiguous.
I can’t judge how reliable and sensitive the test actually is. I did not carry out my own comparative measurement with a known lead concentration or laboratory analysis.
For me, such tests are therefore more interesting as a rough preliminary test: If the swab clearly shows a reaction, this would be an opportunity for me to examine the sample or surface in question more closely and, if necessary, have a laboratory analysis carried out. On the other hand, I would not regard an inconspicuous result as proof that a surface is definitely lead-free.
For this purpose, I find the simple application quite practical. However, anyone who expects a quantitatively or analytically reliable result will not be able to get along with such test swabs. But full star number, because the product description doesn’t promise anything else.
Ms Mia Scott –

X. Richards (verified owner) –
Buying an older property with some original paintwork meant testing for lead before starting any sanding or stripping work was the responsible approach. Thirty swabs in the kit covered every room, every window frame and every door throughout the house without running short, which a smaller kit would not have managed in a single session. The 30-second result time is accurate and the colour change on positive samples was clear and unambiguous without needing to compare against a faint reference card under uncertain lighting. All results from the original paintwork came back negative, which was the outcome hoped for, but having the confirmation before starting work removed any doubt about safe working practices. The swab activation process is straightforward and the instructions are clear enough to follow without any prior testing experience. Water activation keeps the process clean without any chemical handling concerns. The kit covers painted surfaces, ceramics, toys, metal and wood which spans the full range of surfaces likely to be encountered in a renovation context. A practical and well-stocked testing kit that covers a full property survey without needing to order more than one.

Isabella V. Singh (verified owner) –
I like to go thrift shopping quite a bit, especially for kitchen accessories/utensils. Bringing these with me to the thrift has given me the peace of mind that I won’t accidentally bring lead into my house. I’ve found lead many times with these in the thrift, and when approached the store employees they always take it off the shelf never to be seen again.
These are easy to use, fast, the colors are easy to see, and from what I can tell very accurate. The solution is easy to clean off, and it leaves no visible mark behind. Lead testing can get expensive so this is a good affordable way to be thorough and make sure you’re not bringing lead into your home!!
Ms Ahmed A. Iqbal (verified owner) –
As usual, the products I have picked up from this shop are reasonably priced and very fast to arrive. Excellent service.
Alexander Ward –

Fairly straightforward to use and reliable. It is similar to the other tests in the range, but I usually double up on the reagent and the test sample to get a more discernible result, especially when testing phosphates at the lower end of the scale. The only thing better and more reliable would be an electronic phosphate meter, but that costs a fair bit more.

A decent item, although slightly clearer instructions would help. It works fine and there is a sudden colour change, but as a first time user it would have been helpful if the instructions had said that the change was from pink to blue. Fast delivery. These test strips work well and helped me work out where I stood. I do not have a master kit to check the accuracy against yet, but so far it is a decent item. I also got a free gift from the seller, who was very helpful.

Easy to use and easy to understand. The instructions make sense and the colour result is simple to compare, so there is no guesswork. Fine for what I need.

I have been buying these test strips for years and one glance is enough to tell me whether anything needs attention. Thoroughly recommended.
