Phosphates enter pool water through rain, fertiliser drift, sun cream, leaves and general run-off, and once there they feed algae without let-up. That is why a pool can battle recurring algae even when chlorine and pH readings look textbook. These Deep Blue phosphate test strips read from 0 to 1000ppb, showing whether phosphate is the hidden cause.
The strip relies on a chemical colour reaction and fits equally well into environmental monitoring, agriculture and general water quality analysis, with no complex equipment or expertise needed.

How to Use
- Add 5ml of the water sample to the test tube.
- Place the test strip in the tube, close the lid and gently shake upside down for 10 seconds so the strip is fully immersed in the sample.
- Wait 1 minute, then remove the strip.
- Wait a further 4 minutes to allow the reaction to complete.
- Look down vertically at the tube and compare against the colour chart to read the result.

Better safe than sorry. When you are stripping back sixty odd years of wall coverings in an old house and you find yourself looking at the original paint, it is probably a good idea to check for lead before you go any further. Every one should tests phosphate levels of water whether it is for livestock, drinking or showering. You should also test often as water changes drastically due to neighbors overuse of pesticides. Please stop P ing in our aquifers.
This lets you know whether your reverse osmosis or other flirtation system is working. If you use strips and now know you have issues it does not matter which color it turned, u need to correct problem and test again. Once you have under control and are below the threshold cut off of these strips (meaning no color change) them send to lab to see if your are at zero. I don’t need anymore phosphorus as phosphate used in EVERY single packaged food from crackers to McDonald’s so even though I don’t eat meat I have plenty of phosphorus intake as even in prescription medication. We are being poisoned with the level of phophorus and many doctors will tell you maybe you have kidney disease but it will just be the ridiculous amount if phophorus your are intaking.

I know these kits are losing favour, but for me the tests are not too time consuming or difficult. The low end phosphate levels are hard to make out unless you use natural light with few shadows. I would go with an electronic checker for sps, but for a mixed reef like mine this is perfectly acceptable. As a side note, if you keep sps I would still have it handy as a non electronic backup and for checking how well your gfo is working. Run two tests at the same time and compare the colour of the vials from the tank water and from the reactor water, and change the media if the reactor is showing the same phosphate level as the tank. It saves wear on your pricey electronic checker.

This gives the most accurate test results. These are widely considered the best testing supplies for checking reef tank parameters. There is a lot of competition and plenty of products out there, but if the results are not accurate then who cares what the price is. The kits are not cheap, yet they give the best results according to the other local reefers I have asked. The real negative is that they are not that straightforward to use, but once you get the hang of it they all follow basically the same instructions, so it gets easier. To sum up, if a test kit is not accurate then it will not help the reef, so for me these win hands down.

I read about this before buying and it is a new, dependable and easy testing method. I tried it on some pretty vintage plates I picked up second hand and two out of three tested positive for lead, so we will not be using them for food any more. The test is really easy indeed, you put one drop of the liquid on the surface you want to test and then shine the included UV light on it, and if it goes green there is lead.

Good to have for testing water from a RODI unit. I picked this up at my local shop as I needed something fast to test the fresh water coming out of my unit. For a colour chart test it works pretty well and was near enough spot on with my digital tester, which read 0.101 while the kit read between 0.07 and 0.1. My only complaint is that the 15 ml syringe cracked the first time I tried to draw water in, as the plunger seems bigger than the tube. Thankfully I had others on hand so it was not a big deal, but it is something they could look into.

Elegant colour rendering and a scale in steps of 0.2, and I honestly like being able to check the phosphate level two or three times a week so I can top it back up and keep the nitrates where I want them. The colours are far better than the other phosphate test I own. I tested both at the same time and the other one was less accurate, with a scale spread too widely in steps of 0.5 ppm. The set includes a little spoon for the powder, but remember to use the smaller end for scooping. The glass containers are the same quality as the other kit, but the caps are far better because there is no aluminium backed paper that peels apart, just a fairly firm foam insert that does not come apart in the stopper. I am not sure it shows in the photos, but with the naked eye the difference is obvious.

I’m back into keeping aquariums these days. Many years ago I had a basic set up: fish, water, filter, pump, airstone, gravel.
These days I’ve currently got a nano tank with a sponge filter, aqua soil, sand and have it set up so that the plants deal with the bio load etc – and so far so good, I’ve got crystal clear water, a fry that was in a bag of fish has grown and grown to a fully fledged ‘adult’, the plants are thriving, and everyone seems very happy. I had an algae issue from leaving the light on for 18 hours a day when I first ‘built’ the tank and left it for a month with no fish in it. Since then, I’ve got some bottom feeders and algae eaters. It’s been ‘perfect’ for months now.
I ordered these as I’ve never used test strips for aquariums before, only hot tubs. I used the strip as directed and I was so pleased to see that my phosphates barely registered – as the water sat on the strip while I was fiddling about with my camera to take a picture it obviously ‘skewed’ and showed on other colour pads – this is normal as I have experienced from using hot tub strips and as clearly stated on the tub/instructions.
I think after using this, which was super easy, I am definitely going to look into measuring more metrics in my tank. I feel that this product kind of reflected that my tank is healthy (or at least signs suggest so).

A quick and easy way to gauge a critical water quality condition. I love these test strips because they measure perhaps the most deadly element in the hobby in a straightforward way. My only criticism, and this is on me rather than on the strips or the shop, is that I find them harder to read now than I did ten years ago. With my eyesight, the subtle differences on the colour chart sometimes give me trouble, usually when trying to tell a straight zero from something around the halfway mark. I am confident that if there was a serious ammonia problem, and anything above zero needs attention, the colour would tell me, as the green gets more intense. Plenty of light and a white backdrop help with reading the results as well.
